Our goal is to make a real difference in the lives of people living with mental illnesses. Finding better treatments will require funding for research from the U.S. government. Our representatives in Washington need to know that we want them to place a higher priority on curing mental illnesses, which affect so many of us. We will take this petition to Washington to draw attention to the issue and begin a serious dialogue about curing mental illnesses.

This petition is also hosted at Change.org. You can sign it there but please only sign in one place.

We call on the President and Congress of the United States to ensure that mental illnesses get the research attention they deserve. With adequate resources, scientists will be able to find better treatments and maybe even cures for mental illness.

Sincerely,

Who We Are

petition_robin_hakon-300x227

We are “brothers” from different generations—Robin Cunningham and Hakon Heimer. We started this petition from our shared desire to see effective, safe treatments for everyone with mental illness. Read more about us.

Better understanding will help us find treatments that are much more effective. The mental illnesses have a burden about equal to the cancers, yet we spend only about a third of what we spend researching cancer on mental illness research. Even AIDS, which has been reduced to a manageable chronic illness thanks to effective treatments, has more funding. If we attacked mental illnesses with the same vigor and resources as AIDS, we can reduce enormous suffering.

I have been living with bipolar disorder since I was diagnosed at the age of fifteen, thirty years ago. Not only do we need to focus on finding a cure, but to reduce the shame and stigma for people with mental illness.
